VOLUNTEER CENTER

John Romano joins URVC Leadership Council

John Romano, the newest member of the University Retirees Volunteer Center (URVC) Leadership Council, joined UMRA in 2015 when he retired from the University after serving on the faculty since 1976, first in the General College (GC) and then in the Department of Educational Psychology. Romano was drawn to GC as the open-door unit serving non-traditional students in a large university.

Since retirement, Romano has continued to engage in professional activities—as a Fulbright Scholar at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand, teaching a graduate-level applied psychology course in Guatemala, and serving on the U of M Presidential Task Force on Student Mental Health.

Romano’s rich international experience includes collaborations and scholarship across several countries. It began with his service as a Peace Corps volunteer for three years in Nigeria. Throughout his University experience, he has been a leader among those providing mental health support for students on campus. This background will be particularly helpful to URVC as it seeks to contribute to the University’s efforts to support international students and address student loneliness on campus.

In addition to attending UMRA programs and events, Romano has served on an UMRA Nominating Committee and received two UMRA Professional Development Grants for Retirees awards. He maintains his psychology license, and has volunteered with the American Red Cross Disaster Mental Health Team.

Romano’s family is truly maroon and gold. His three children either received degrees from the U or worked on campus, and his daughter-in-law is a veterinarian with the College of Veterinary Medicine.

URVC provides opportunities for individuals to use their knowledge, skills, and interests in service to the University and surrounding communities. Please visit [email protected] to learn more.
