Assist Adult English Language Learners

The International Institute of Minnesota seeks Volunteer Navigators

The International Institute is looking for empathetic, patient, motivated people to assist in piloting a new Volunteer Navigator program. These Navigators will be part-guidance counselor, part-coach, part-cheerleader, and part-mentor for students. If you are eager to use your communication skills and your creative problem-solving to help our adult English language learners reach their career, educational and personal goals, this opportunity could be for you.

Navigators will meet regularly with their student, at the Institute, having prepared each session to meet the learner’s goals and needs. You will keep a record of session activities, thelearner’s progress, any absences or problems, and provide additional reports as may be requested by the program coordinator. Program staff is available onsite when help is needed with unforeseen issues or questions. 

Volunteer commitment is:

            Two(2) hours, once per week (same day/time each week)

            Monday. Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday between the hours of 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Volunteer eligibility and training:

Minnesota Literacy Council’s Volunteer Navigator Trainings is recommended, but not required. Please see website for the next available class: https://mnliteracy.org/volunteers/volunteer-with-adults

Experience in social work, counseling, or mentoring preferred, but not required.

What to wear: International Institute has a flexible standard of attire that could be defined as business casual. Women usually wear pants, skirts, or dresses.  Men wear pants, a nice shirt and occasionally a tie (for a meeting or special event). As our clients/students are often new to the U.S. we hope to set a good example of what is proper attire at a place of employment.

Meet UMRA member Peter Moe. He retired in 2023 after a career that spanned nearly half a century at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, and is credited with developing the “Arb” into one of the few in the U.S. with world-class fruit and landscape breeding programs.

The University Retirees Volunteer Center (URVC) has welcomed two new members with valuable skills and experience to the URVC Leadership Council: Lynn Slifer and Jeanne Jacobson.

The University plans to remove retirees from the @umn.edu internet identity domain on December 7. UMRA has advocated for ensuring continued access to this identity (including email, Google Workspace, and associated services), citing University retirees’ enduring contributions to and engagement with the University. Thus far, our efforts have not prompted any change of plans.

Leading the online Journal of Opinions, Ideas & Essays has been a labor of love for Kris Bettin. Alas, a change in family needs has necessitated her retirement. So, JOIE is seeking a new leader to join a savvy editorial committee of five and bring fresh ideas for continued development of the UMRA-sponsored journal.
