Reading Tutors Needed 

Hospitality House Youth Development

Hospitality House Youth Development’s Urban Learning Center provides intensive academic support in a caring environment that builds self-esteem and confidence for at-risk youth.  The Learning Center goal for after school academic programs is to increase student reading levels by 10% in the coming year.  

HHYD is currently seeking volunteers to commit to one 1 - 2 hour shift  per week between the hours of  2 and 5 p.m.

Description of volunteer duties:  You will be paired with a teacher and class. You will spend about 30-40 minutes with each student assigned to you during your shift, reading aloud, practicing sight words, alphabet, and reading games. HHYD teachers help define the appropriate materials for individual students.

Dates: This is an ongoing opportunity; Mondays through Thursdays, 2-5 p.m.; you select your shift time.

Location and parking: Adjacent free parking lot, or on-street free parking. All classes are held in HHYD’s northside facility at: 1220 Logan Ave North, Mpls, 55411

Training and requirements: No previous experience required. Volunteers will receive on site instruction when they arrive for their first shifts. There are always teachers available to assist. Upon receiving your application we will submit the required background check.

What to wear: Comfortable, casual attire.

Physical expectations: Volunteers will be seated, working with their student.

Meet UMRA member Peter Moe. He retired in 2023 after a career that spanned nearly half a century at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, and is credited with developing the “Arb” into one of the few in the U.S. with world-class fruit and landscape breeding programs.

The University Retirees Volunteer Center (URVC) has welcomed two new members with valuable skills and experience to the URVC Leadership Council: Lynn Slifer and Jeanne Jacobson.

The University plans to remove retirees from the @umn.edu internet identity domain on December 7. UMRA has advocated for ensuring continued access to this identity (including email, Google Workspace, and associated services), citing University retirees’ enduring contributions to and engagement with the University. Thus far, our efforts have not prompted any change of plans.

Leading the online Journal of Opinions, Ideas & Essays has been a labor of love for Kris Bettin. Alas, a change in family needs has necessitated her retirement. So, JOIE is seeking a new leader to join a savvy editorial committee of five and bring fresh ideas for continued development of the UMRA-sponsored journal.
