Fourth Friday Book Club to discuss Louise Erdrich’s debut novel

Fri, Mar 24 2023, 2pm

Event to be held via Zoom.

Love Medicine is Louise Erdrich's debut novel, first published in 1984 and revised and expanded in 1993 and 2009 editions. It follows five interconnected Ojibwe families living on fictional reservations in Minnesota and North Dakota and, for a time, in Minneapolis–St. Paul. There are several narrators, each reflecting various points of view that are often markedly different on the recital of similar events.

It is a story of love and survival, of the comic and the tragic.

Erdrich is a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians. Born in Little Falls, Minnesota, her childhood years were spent in Wahpeton, North Dakota, where both her parents taught at an Indian boarding school. She frequently visited family members who lived on Native American reservations.

Erdrich has authored 34 books, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, children's literature, and a memoir. She has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the 1984 National Book Critics Circle Award, the Library of Congress Prize for American Fiction, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Native Writers' Circle of the Americas Award, and the 2021 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

Interested UMRA members are welcome to join the Fourth Friday Book Club meeting via Zoom from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Friday, March 24. Contact Dorothy Marden at [email protected] or Margaret Catambay at [email protected] to learn more.
