From James Herriot’s Yorkshire to ‘the roof of Africa’
Wed, Jan 25 2023, 10am
Journey from James Herriot’s Yorkshire to “the roof of Africa” with UMRA members Bev Moe and David Fisher when UMRA’s Armchair Traveler interest group convenes for its first meeting of the new year from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 25, via Zoom.
“What’s it like to climb to the sky?” is how Fisher describes his ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro at age 62. “Climbing it depends on training, stamina, and perseverance. It took four days of climbing and two months of training on top of regular workouts already in progress the year before. Kilimanjaro is the world’s largest free-standing mountain and the highest in Africa at four miles above sea level. And the mountain boasts the most unique and varied landscapes on earth. Let’s ascend to the roof of Africa!"

Moe offered this preview of her journey as an American hiking the Cleveland Way in Yorkshire, England. “This is James Herriot’s Yorkshire. The first stop on the 109-mile Cleveland Way is at Sutton Bank, where the famous author called the panoramic view from the escarpment ‘the finest view in all of England.’ He was right. This sometimes grueling but always spectacular hike provided breathtaking views of valleys, moors, and the North Sea. My English friend Margaret and I undertook this journey with our own planning and carrying our rucksacks every step of the way.”
A Zoom invite will be emailed to all UMRA members a couple weeks before the program. Please contact Lynn Anderson at [email protected] for more information or if you would like to share your photos and travel memories.
