‘Red Notice’ is FF Book Club pick for January meeting

Fri, Jan 27 2023, 2pm

Event to be held via Zoom.

Red Notice: A True Story of High Finance, Murder, and One Man's Fight for Justice is a story about an accidental activist. Author Bill Browder started out as a Wall Street hedge fund manager. In the 1990s, after the breakup of the Soviet Union, Browder moved to Moscow, where he amassed a fortune investing in emerging Russian businesses and engaging in complex financial trades. But after Browder raised questions about official corruption, his companies and offices were raided and their assets were seized. His outspoken Russian tax attorney, Sergei Magnitsky, was tortured and beaten to death in a Moscow jail where he was held for almost a year.

Browder vigorously led efforts for the U.S. Congress to pass the Sergei Magnitsky Rule of Law Accountability Act of 2012, which led to sanctions against Russian human rights violators and officials implicated in the detention and murder of Magnitsky.

Red Notice is a no-holds-barred telling of Browder's experiences. It is also a story of three generations of episodic history with Russia. Bill Browder's grandfather, Earl Browder, had been president of the American Communist Party. The second-generation Browder, Felix, graduated from MIT at age 18 and received his PhD at Princeton two years later. Nevertheless, the notoriety of his Communist father barred the mathematics prodigy from professional recognition until many years into his career.

UMRA’s Fourth Friday Book Club meeting will be held via Zoom from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on January 27. Contact Dorothy Marden at [email protected] or Margaret Catambay at [email protected] for information about how to join the meeting.
