This AARP sponsored event is promoted by the University of Minnesota Retirees Volunteer Center. There are a variety of volunteer positions. Consider them and if you wish to volunteer contact [email protected] for the Volunteer Application on which you select your position. Then, inform URVC which opportunity you have chosen.

Open positions include:

1)   Day of Ride Registration @ Lot M, Univ. of St. Thomas. Greet riders; obtain waiver & payment; issue tag; distribute course map. @ 6:30 – 9:30 AM

2)   Preregistered Rider Check-In @ Lot M, Univ. of St. Thomas Main Tent. Greet riders; issue tags; distribute course map. @ 6:30 – 9:30 AM

3)   Rest Stop Crews: Offer food & drinks to riders; keep food stocked

a)   Mississippi River Overlook @ Crosby Farm Regional Park (Shepard Rd. & 35E) @ 6:30 – 9:30 AM

b)   Indian Mounds Park @ 7:00 – 9:30 AM or 9:00 – 11:30 AM

c)    Top of Ramsey Hill (Ramsey St. & Summit Ave.) @ 7:30 – Noon, or CHEER squad on the hill to motivate riders @ 8:15 – 11:30 AM

d)   Como Lakeside Pavilion (1360 Lexington Pkwy.) @ 7:45 – 10 AM or 10 – 12:15 PM

4)   Rest Stop Recycling/Composting Educators: Show riders what to compost or recycle

a)   6:30 – 9 AM – Univ. of St. Thomas

b)   7 – 10:30 AM – Mississippi Overlook Rest Stop @ Crosby Farm Regional Park

c)    7 – 9:30 AM -   Indian Mounds Park Rest Stop

d)   9 – 11:30 AM -  Univ. of St. Thomas

e)    9:15 – 12:30 AM -  Indian Mounds Park Rest Stop

f)     10 – N00n –    Como Lakeside Pavilion

g)   11 – 1:30 PM - Univ. of St. Thomas

h)   Noon – 1:30 PM - Como Lakeside Pavilion

5)   Food Tent Workers @ St. Thomas: distribute food & beverages @ 9:30 – 1:30 PM

6)   Post-Ride Merchandise Sales @ St. Thomas: collect payments; sort merchandise @ 9:30 – 1:30 PM

7)   Post-Ride T-Shirt Distribution: pre-ordered t-shirts for participants after ride

8)   Ride Marshal: Must be experienced cyclist; ride assigned section of the course; guide cyclists; assist in bike mechanicals; change flats, chain drops, stuck brakes. Must have current First-Aid training. 2 Routes: 15 mile Summit Ave. route or 30 mile St. Paul Grand Round route. Different times available starting @ 8:15-10:15.

The election of UMRA officers and new board members for 2024–25 will be conducted via an online poll from May 13 to 19, with the results to be announced at our annual meeting on May 21. Look for the ballot in your email inbox on May 13. Diane Young has been nominated to be president-elect.

Meet UMRA member Peter Moe. He retired in 2023 after a career that spanned nearly half a century at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, and is credited with developing the “Arb” into one of the few in the U.S. with world-class fruit and landscape breeding programs.

The University Retirees Volunteer Center (URVC) has welcomed two new members with valuable skills and experience to the URVC Leadership Council: Lynn Slifer and Jeanne Jacobson.

The University plans to remove retirees from the @umn.edu internet identity domain on December 7. UMRA has advocated for ensuring continued access to this identity (including email, Google Workspace, and associated services), citing University retirees’ enduring contributions to and engagement with the University. Thus far, our efforts have not prompted any change of plans.

If you’re looking for an opportunity to explore your photographic interests, hone your photographic skills, and hear what other retirees are up to, the UMRA Photo Club is a great place to be. We have fun! And whatever your skill level, there is room for everybody.

Leading the online Journal of Opinions, Ideas & Essays has been a labor of love for Kris Bettin. Alas, a change in family needs has necessitated her retirement. So, JOIE is seeking a new leader to join a savvy editorial committee of five and bring fresh ideas for continued development of the UMRA-sponsored journal.
