Preparing to lose your umn.edu email
On December 7, many of us will lose our UMN email addresses and any files associated with these accounts. If you are in that category, you should have been receiving emails from the UMN Email and Google Workspace Transition Team reminding you of the upcoming deadline and giving instructions on how to deal with it.
If you are emeriti faculty, you will not be losing your University email and Google Workspace account and should not have been receiving the warning emails.
For the rest of us, there are three basic things we need to do to prepare:
- Set up a non-UMN email account (if you do not already have one). You can also set up a new UMN alumni account. Note: To enroll in an alumni email account, you will need to provide a non-UMN email address.
- Give your new email address to UMRA, the University, and all your contacts for email, memberships, and subscriptions.
- Move any files associated with your umn.edu email and Google Workspace to another place.
The University’s Office of Information Technology (OIT) email transition team has developed an online “Self-Help Guide” that offers information on how to do each of these tasks. Here are some additional tips:
- The OIT self-help guide is a general one for all people leaving the University, not just retirees. To find what you need, scroll down to find the sections on email and moving data.
- You can open a new email account with a number of vendors (e.g., Comcast, iCloud, Outlook, Yahoo). Because your umn.edu email is a Gmail account, getting your own Gmail account is likely to make for the easiest transition. It’s free and relatively easy to create a new Gmail account.
- If you have just a few files in your UMN workspace (Google drive), the easiest way to move them is to download the files to your own device and then upload them to your new account. If you have a lot, you will want to use specialized software to help, such as Google Takeout Transfer or VaultMe.
- UMRA members only have access to a special video on using VaultMe, and a credit for the cost if you end up with charges. After you log into retirees.umn.edu you will see it on the right in the Dashboard page: Watch this video workshop on changes to Email and Google Workspace
- Make sure you give UMRA your new email address! Go to retirees.umn.edu and after loggin in, click on the Change Login Email Address button to make the update.
- Questions should be directed to [email protected] They can answer many of your initial questions quickly.
- You can ask advanced questions of OIT by submitting an online form to request help and support. This takes longer.

On December 7, many of us will lose our UMN email addresses and any files associated with these accounts. There are three basic things we need to do to prepare.
UMRA member Susan Kubitschek attended the University of Minnesota on the G.I. Bill and, after working at the U for 40 years, retired as assistant dean and director of Collegiate Life in the College of Science and Engineering.
Delegates to the Big Ten Retirees Association 2024 annual conference met at The Ohio State University in July to learn about Ohio State, share ideas, and develop closer ties among the 28 attendees from 12 of the 14 Big Ten schools. Minnesota will host the conference in 2026.
“UMRA members are engaged ‘University citizens’ with decades of experience at every level of this great institution, and we want to have a mutually useful and effective relationship with the Board of Regents,” says John Finnegan, UMRA’s new liaison to the regents.
UMRA member Mike Austin is taking full advantage of his retirement to volunteer in a variety of activities, travel, and learn a new language. He says, “I have the time, I have the ability, and I get bored sitting around.”
Funding of up to $5,000 per grant is available to support U of M retirees’ research, instructional history, new scholarship, or creative interests.
Members of UMRA’s 2024–25 Board of Directors were elected in May. Directors are elected to three-year terms and may serve two consecutive terms.
Fall is approaching and UMRA needs everyone to renew their membership. New membership cards for 2024–25 include the QR code you need to access one of the great benefits of membership: a discounted rate in University parking facilities.
