December 2 Hike in Moir Park

Mon, Dec 2, 2024, 9:30am

Location
Moir Park
10360 Morgan Avenue South, Bloomington MN

Our December 2, 2024 hike, led by Bev Moe, is a return to Moir Park in Bloomington for a walk along Nine Mile Creek to the Minnesota River and back. This trail is mostly flat, winding along the creek, with frequent sightings of eagles, owls and egrets. The path to the river is half paved and half grass and dirt. Because this is an out-and-back trail, those who wish a shorter hike could walk about 1.2 miles to the end of the paved path and back for a distance of about 2 ½ miles. A longer option will take us to the Minnesota River and back for a 4 ½ to 5 mile hike.

We will meet at 9:30 AM at the Morgan Avenue Parking lot of Moir Park located at 10360 Morgan Avenue South, Bloomington MN, and start hiking by 9:40. There is a portable toilet located at the beginning of the trail but no potable water. Ice grippers may be useful if there is snow on the ground on December 2. Bev will notify you of the trail conditions before the hike with a recommendation for appropriate footwear.

Please sign up for this hike (required). Your completed form will be used to be sure everyone has arrived. Registrations will be accepted up to 24 hours before the hike.

Cabinets of Curiosities will seek out the University of Minnesota Herbarium on the St Paul Campus.  Tim Whifeld, Collections Manager, will share his knowledge of that amazing collection and explain its critical importance in the twenty-first century. Botanists study these pressed plants, individually and collectively, to establish a history of plant life, often over centuries, because they contain compelling evidence of the ever modulating geographical distribution of plants and evidence of how climate, pests, and other factors have changed species over time.
