Edith Wharton – The Age of Innocence

Fri, Jun 28, 2024, 2pm

Location
Event to be held via Zoom.

Edith Wharton is best known for her stories about upper-class New York society into which she was born. Age of Innocence is her eighth novel, published in 1920 was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1921.

Reviewers at the book's publication celebrated the mastery of the plot, the characters and the style, whatever that meant. For some critics Age of Innocence was brilliant, the best of Wharton, although acknowledging its oppressive conventions, it was a high society world that drew the line on vulgarity, offensive scenes and made much of class distinctions.

In the 1930's, Wharton reflected on how her reputation was being recast that her world was remote and no longer relevant. “I was once called, you know a revolutionary writer, critics then talked about my audacious treatment of unpleasant themes.”

Judge for yourself, my take is that The Age of Innocence is a big story that transcends the period to richly convey character, the complexity of relationships and the boundless barriers imposed by society and self.
