BOOK CLUB II

Fourth Friday Book Club in August

Fri, Aug 22, 2025, 2pm

Location
Event to be held via Zoom.

The Fourth Friday Book Club will meet August 22nd in observance of the 100th anniversary of the publication of The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

The question comes to mind, how many times have you read The Great Gatsby, in high school, in college, independently. The book came to be seen as perhaps a satire of the 1920's, a retelling of materialism, social class, and a melancholy, mysterious millionaire. A wasteland of empty frivolous lifestyles.

In the last 50 or more years, the readership of the Great Gatsby has grown, especially beyond a mere required class assignment. How to unpack the powerful hold the book has among the best of 20th century novels. The Existential Gatsby: a study no less of the challenging mores confronting and occasionally corrupting contemporary society. The themes of alienation, unforgiving longing, senseless violence, death, and pervasive acts of the absurd. It is regarded as a precursor to popular novels like Albert Camus' The Stranger, Saul Bellow's Dangling Man, and Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye.

A tall order for any book. The Great Gatsby succeeds. A timely book for our time.

Everyone is welcome to join in the FOURTH FRIDAY BOOK CLUB II meetings!
